Abstract

The Central Valley grows more than just food; it grows technology, too. In July 2016, the Valley
Public Radio made this assertion in an interview with Fresno and Bakersfield technology leaders
trying to change the mindset at home. Alyssa Haerle, founder of the Kern Innovation & Technology
(KIT) Community, was among them. Talent and opportunity for technology creation exist outside Silicon
Valley, even in Bakersfield. KIT is a leader in this charge to make Bakersfield and Kern County a
place for technology talent to stay and thrive. Alyssa?s presentation at CSUB on 9/2/2016 will
introduce students to KIT and its resources and events for students.

Description of KIT Community

The KIT Community is a local resource in the tech community for those seeking to learn about,
explore, and build their own technology and technology startups. This organization is building an
active, prosperous tech and innovation community in Kern County. Founded in February 2016 by local
entrepreneur and Stanford/UCLA alumna Alyssa Haerle, KIT has so far hosted Bakersfield?s first two
hackathons helping to create 8 new startup ideas with one successfully launched as a mobile
application in August 2016. KIT also provides mentorship and connections to the local technology
community in Bakersfield/Kern County. The KIT Community believes in creating opportunity through
innovation.
